"Switch to Account View" vs "Login As User"

"Switch to Account View" and "Login As User" are two powerful features that allow super users to view the portal from an end-user's perspective. This article reviews how to use each feature and what the difference is between the two.

Login As User

How to

To login as a user, go to the "Users" page, click on the user you are interested in, and then click "Login As User".

Alternatively, you can go to the "Accounts" page, select an account, click on the user you are interested in from the Linked Users section, and then click "Login As User".

This will give you the complete end-user experience. You will see exactly what that user is seeing, and in the top right dropdown, you will see the exact accounts that they are linked to.

To leave this view, click the top right dropdown, and then click "Admin View".

When to use

Login As User is powerful when you need to see an exact user experience. This is particularly helpful when interacting with permission-based items, such as subscriptions, device linking, or showing different items to different user levels (admin vs limited user).

You must use Login As User (instead of Switch to Account View) when testing displaying pages conditionally based on subscription.

Note that you will not be able to adjust dashboard code while you are logged in as a user since the portal will detect that you have insufficient permissions to access the code.

Switch to Account View

How to

There are two ways to switch to account view. The most common is to go to "Accounts", select the account you want to view, and then click "Switch to Account View". Alternatively, you can use the top right dropdown and select the account you want to view.

This will give you a partial end-user experience. You will see that majority of what the user is seeing, but any subscription-based restrictions will be lifted since you have super user permissions. In the top right dropdown, you will see all accounts and can switch to any other account from here.

To leave this view, click the top right dropdown, and then click "Admin View".

When to use

Switch to Account View is the go-to option for the majority of development and account viewing issues, since you can still edit dashboard pages and see the majority of the user experience.

You must use Login As User (instead of Switch to Account View) when testing displaying pages conditionally based on subscription.
